Overview

The Ballincollig Green Route (BGR) is now completed.

The works began in November 2008 and were completed in early 2011.
The project was a huge success and has completely upgraded Ballincollig into one of the most modern towns in Ireland with world class infrastructure.

The Ballincollig Green Route (BGR) is identified in the Cork Area Strategic Plan (CASP) and commissioned jointly by Cork County Council and Cork City Council.

The purpose of the BGR is to give priority to alternative modes of transport by providing bus corridors, cycle lanes and improving pedestrian facilities.

The main contractor for the works is McGinty & O'Shea Ltd. The lead consultant is Atkins Ireland. The consultant responsible for Water Services is Malachy Walsh & Partners.

Summary of the works carried out by the Ballincollig Green Route & Water Services Contract:

Water Services
- 1.8km of 300mm diameter ductile iron watermain and associated service connections, new water meter boundary boxes, sluice valves, air valves, pressure reducing valve, water meters, hydrants and marker posts.
- 1.2km of 225mm to 525mm diameter foul sewer and associated service connections.
- 1.5km of 225mm to 525mm diameter storm sewer and associated gullies.

Road Works
- 30000sq.m of pavement overlay.
- 7.8km of footpath.
- 70km of ducting.
- 160m gravity block retaining wall.
- Traffic signs and road markings.
- Minor road realignment works.
- Landscaping works.

Pedestrian & Cyclist Facilities
- 12 new and upgraded bus stops.
- 4km of cycle track.
- 1.5km of bus lane.
- 11 new and upgraded traffic light junctions.
- 3 new toucan (pedestrian & cyclist) crossings.
- 5 new and upgraded pedestrian crossings.

Urban Renewal Works
- Upgraded streetscape along all Main Street, Ballincollig.
- Block Paving.
- Modifications to on-street car parking.
- Decorative public lighting from Castlepark and Main Street junction through town centre to Ballincollig Shopping Centre Surface Car Park Entrance and Main Street junction.
- New trees and landscaping.
- Street furniture.

Public Lighting
- 6.5km of non decorative public lighting.

Undergrounding ESB Overhead Network Lines
- Undergrounding of ESB Overhead Network Lines from Harrington Street and Main Street junction to Innishmore and Main Street junction.
