The works are progressing very well and on program to restore two-way traffic along R608 Main Street in early July 2010. There are currently two separate crews working in the town centre. The first crew is ducting and block paving eastwards towards the entrance of the new Garda Station on the northern side of the R608 Main Street. The second crew is ducting and block paving westwards towards the entrance of the new Garda Station on the northern side of the R608 Main Street. There is approximately 50m of ducting and block paving separating the two crews and this is the only remaining section of footpath works remaining in the town centre. It is planned to complete this section of work early next week. Once these works are complete the remaining old road surface from East Town Centre to Station Road will be overlaid with a new road surface. It is currently planned to begin the road surfacing works from Monday 28th June 2010. The road manhole covers and gullies will then be raised, the road lined and imprinted asphalt raised ramps for pedestrian crossings installed. Once all these works are completed two-way traffic will be reinstated along R608 Main Street Balllincollig.

There is currently a crew working on the new footpath along the eastern verge of the Carrigrohane Road from Leemount to Inchigaggin Lane. This crew is installing a pedestrian guardrail to protect and improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists travelling along north eastern side of Leemount junction. The crew will then provide a new ramp from the new footpath to join onto the existing cycle lane on eastbound carriageway at Inchigaggin Lane and Carrigrohane Road junction.

There is currently a crew working at Innishmore and R608 Main Street junction. An extra road carriageway is being constructed north towards Innishmore from the Main Street. The junction is being upgraded with new replacement traffic lights. The works at this junction are advance works for the West End junction upgrade. It is planned to begin the West End junction upgrade in early July 2010 and will require approximately 10 weeks to complete. Below is a detailed copy of the proposed traffic management plan for the West End junction upgrade for your information.

  • Current Work Status

The streetscape works in the town centre have begun and are now advancing well. There are currently four crews for the Contractor working on site.

The first crew is installing ducts and installing block paving footpaths from the Ballincollig Shopping Centre surface car park entrance east towards Station Road along the northern verge of the R608 eastbound carriageway.

The second crew is installing ducts and installing block paving footpaths from Harrington Street west towards East Town Centre along the southern verge of the R608 westbound carriageway.

The third crew is installing ducts and installing concrete footpaths from Healy?s bar to the East Gate junction along the northern verge of the R608 eastbound carriageway.

The forth crew is currently pressure testing and chlorinating the new 300mm diameter watermain along Section 2 works from Leo Murphy Road to Station Road along the R608.

There are also two sub-contractor crews working on new line marking and textured surfacing from the West End Roundabout west towards Classes Lake and also along Section 1 works from Poulavone Roundabout to Leo Murphy Road.

  • Completed Works

The installation of ducts and installation of concrete footpaths from the East Gate Junction to the Castlepark entrance along the southern verge of the R608 westbound carriageway was completed in mid February 2010.

Public lighting columns have been erected from Inchigaggin Lane west along the Carrigrohane Straight to Leemount and from Poulavone Roundabout west along the R608 to Leo Murphy Road. In the next few months it is expected that the lighting heads will be installed on these columns and they will be turned on.

The laying of underground services like the new 300mm diameter trunk watermain and trunk storm sewers was completed in early January 2010. The existing residential and commercial services will now have to be connected to the new trunk line watermain. These works will begin within the next few weeks. In some instances it will be necessary to switch off water supply to premises to transfer over watermain connections from the old line to the new line. Advance notification in the form of an information leaflet will be delivered to affected users a few days before any switch over is carried out.

  • Traffic Management Plan

From 13th January 2010, to facilitate the construction works of the Ballincollig Green Route & Water Services Contract, Section 2 Works, the traffic management plan was re-established as per traffic management plan before Christmas, with diversions for eastbound (towards Cork City) traffic. Westbound (away from Cork City) traffic is being maintained at all times.

  • Traffic Light Junctions

The traffic light signals at the Kilumney Road and Station Road Junction were switched on 10th February 2010. The junction is running more smoothly than before and the traffic controlled lights have improved the safe movements of vehicles and pedestrians at this junction.

The junction of the R608 with Classes Lake and Lisheen Fields is being upgraded to a signalised junction. Approximately 90 percent of this work was completed in January 2010 and early February 2010 and it is expected that this traffic signalised junction will be fully operational by May 2010.

  • Weather

The extreme cold and wet weather conditions in November, December and January had a detrimental effect to many water service connections and road surfaces throughout Cork. We are proud to announce that we did not have any problems with any of the new works completed so far under the Ballincollig Green Route and Water Services Contract and this is a credit to the quality of workmanship being carried out on this project.

Outline of proposed works through December 2009 and January 2010

The current pipe laying works along Main Street Ballincollig from Muskerry Temporary Roundabout eastbound to East Gate (ALDI Entrance) will cease on Friday 4th December 2009 to allow the re-establishment of two-way traffic through Ballincollig Town Centre for the duration of the busy Christmas shopping and celebration period. Please be advised that during this period buses will return to their original route along Main Street Ballincollig and will not use the Old Fort Road northern diversion route and temporary bus stops along this section. Notices will be placed in advance on the affected bus shelters to inform users.

From week commencing 7th December 2009 the Contractor will move to construct the following works:
The construction of a stormwater sewer from Barry's Road eastbound towards Oriel House Hotel.
The construction of a stormwater sewer from the Muskerry Temporary Roundabout westbound towards Oreil House Hotel.
Construction of a new traffic light controlled junction at Classis Lake.
All the above construction activities will be undertaken whilst maintaining two-way traffic flow on the roads adjacent to the works areas in order to minimise disruption to road users as practically possible.

From week commencing 11th January 2010, the contractor will re-establish the one-way traffic flow westbound along Main Street Ballincollig with eastbound traffic diverted north along the Old Fort Road, as per current traffic flow arrangement. This will allow adequate works area width to commence the Streetscape Works through Main Street Ballincollig.

At the current work rate it is expected that works will be completed along Main Street Ballincollig by May 2010.

Construction News 2nd November 2009 (back to top)

Please be advised that the junction of the East Town Centre & Main Street will be closed for three days starting tomorrow morning Tuesday 3rd November 2009 until Thursday 5th November 2009. This closure is necessary to allow construction of a new stormwater sewer and watermain pipeline through this junction.

Access to all businesses located on the Old Fort Road, including those situated in Barrack Square, will be maintained from the recently opened Old Fort Road.

Please see attached traffic plan image, note that there will be no turning movements allowed at East Town Centre and R608 Main Street Ballincollig (area circled in blue font) for the next 3 days it will require to complete the works. Access to East Town Centre during this time will only be possible via the Old Fort Road.

Construction News 29th October 2009 (back to top)

From tomorrow 30th October 2009, the remaining section of the Old Fort Road from East Town Centre to East Gate will be opened to two-way traffic. The result will be that traffic may travel in both directions from the Muskerry Temporary Roundabout along the Old Fort Road to the East Gate and R608 Main Street junction.

The traffic restriction in place for eastbound traffic from the Muskerry Temporary Roundabout along the R608 Main Street to the R608 Main Street and East Town Centre junction (location of Sam's Bar) will now be extended to the R608 Main Street and East Gate junction (entrance to ALDI and Ballicollig GAA Club).

Construction News 7th October 2009 (back to top)

From today 7th October 2009, to facilitate the construction works of the Ballincollig Green Route & Water Services Contract, Section 2 Works, a traffic management plan has been put in place with diversions for eastbound (towards Cork City) traffic. Westbound (away from Cork City) traffic is being maintained at all times.

There is now a traffic restriction in place for eastbound traffic from the Muskerry Temporary Roundabout along the R608 Main Street to the R608 Main Street and East Town Centre junction (location of Sam's Bar). Eastbound traffic along this section can use the following alternative route:

1) From the west, take first exit at the Muskerry Temporary Roundabout onto the Old Fort Road and continue east to the R608 Main Street and East Town Centre junction.

Please note that from today traffic travelling east to Ballincollig Town Centre will have to use the alternative route above and this will be further restricted tomorrow 8th October 2009 so that traffic exiting from Station Road onto the R608 Main Street will not be allowed turn right (eastbound) and traffic exiting onto the R608 from the Dunnes Stores Car Park will not be allowed turn left (eastbound). From tomorrow 8th October 2009, traffic will only be allowed to travel west along the R608 Main Street from the East Town Centre to the Muskerry Temporary Roundabout.

This one-way westbound priority traffic flow system will be maintained until approximately Easter 2010. Please note that construction works will cease in the Town Centre during the Christmas period 2009 for approximately 4 weeks to minimise any disruption caused by the construction work on Christmas Shoppers and Traders.

On Friday 11th September 2009, the traffic restriction along the R608 Main Street from Poulavone Roundabout to Leo Murphy Road/Link Road was removed. Traffic has returned to its original two-way traffic flow movement from Poulavone Roundabout to Leo Murphy Road/Link Road along the R608 Main Street. This section of road is now complete except for the installing and commissioning of new public lights, new pedestrian traffic lights and road signage.

To facilitate the construction works of the Ballincollig Green Route & Water Services Contract, Section 2 Works, there will be a traffic management plan put in place with diversions for eastbound (towards Cork City) traffic. Westbound (away from Cork City) traffic will be maintained at all times. The proposed traffic management plan as shown on this website?s news 31st August 2009 has not yet been implemented because it is dependent on the opening of the remaining section of the Old Fort Road along the rear of ALDI at East Gate. To date, due to unforeseen circumstances we have been unable to secure the successful opening of this new section of road but it is hoped in the next few weeks, it will be opened. It is envisaged that the opening of the remaining section of the Old Fort Road will improve the flow of traffic through Ballincollig Town Centre.

Work on the Kilumney Road and Station Road junction is 90% complete. Within the next few weeks, the new traffic lights will be connected to the electricty grid by ESB Networks and turned on. The junction road carriageway will then be white lined. It is planned to have the new traffic light signalised junction fully operational by the beginning of November 2009.

Works along Section 2 from Leo Murphy Road to East Gate is progressing to plan. These works involve new underground ducting, footpaths, street furniture, public lighting, watermain replacement, new storm sewer and new road resurfacing. The footpath along the edge of the west bound lane is complete and works on the footpath and new bus bay along the edge of the east bound lane is currently being constructed from Leesdale junction west towards East Gate. It is also planned to commence a new storm water sewer from Castlepark towards Eastgate within a couple of weeks.

Section 6 Works, along N22 Carrigrohane Road is now approximately 80% complete. 1600m of new concrete footpath ranging in width from 1.5m to 3.5m has been completed along the verge of the N22 Carrigrohane eastbound lane from Inchigaggin Lane to Leemount junction. This new footpath will be white lined along its centre to provide a combined footpath (boundary ditch side) and cycle lane (road edge side). New public lights are also due to be installed and commissioned along this section.

Works are currently being carried out along the verge of the westbound lane west of Leemount junction. A new footpath, bus bay, public lighting, foul sewer crossing and junction layout alteration for Church Hill are being constructed at this location. Work has also begun on the east side of Poulavone Roundabout and these works will be continued east along Model Farm Road. These works involve the upgrading of pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure.

In the next few weeks, it is planned to commence the construction of a new storm water sewer from Dunnes Stores car park entrance west of Ballincollig Town Centre towards the temporary Muskerry Roundabout.

Construction News 19th March 2009 (back to top)

The traffic light signals at the Kilumney Road and Leo Murphy Road Junction were switched on 5th March 2009 at approximately 10.30am. It was necessary to remove the temporary roundabout and switch on the traffic lights to improve SAFETY for vehicles and pedestrians using this junction. The westbound lane from Poulavone Roundabout to Leo Murphy is currently closed for traffic to allow for construction works as part of the Ballincollig Green Route and Water Services Contract, Section 1 Works. The Kilumney Road and Leo Murphy Road Junction traffic signals were designed based on the westbound lane from Poulavone Roundabout to Leo Murphy Road being open to traffic. Consequently, the signalling times had to be redesigned to cater for the much higher volume of traffic at peak flow times because of the closed westbound lane from Poulavone Roundabout to Leo Murphy Road. The traffic movements at this junction are being closely monitored to enable further optimisation of the traffic light signalling times, especially at peak flow times. When a major junction like this one is signalised for the first time, it usually requires settlement time to allow users to adapt to the new traffic movements.

Work is now well advanced along Main Street Ballincollig from the Leesdale entrance to the Poulavone Roundabout. The new 525mm diameter to a 300mm diameter foul sewer will replace the existing foul sewer from inside Leesdale Estate, then out along Main Street Ballincollig to the Poulavone Roundabout. The new foul sewer is now approximately 80% completed. The new foul sewer began at Leesdale Estate and is currently opposite the Manor Hill Estate entrance. The foul sewer is being laid along the westbound carriageway of Main Street Ballincollig. It is planned to continue laying the new foul sewer eastwards towards the Poulavone Roundabout and by late April 2009 it is hoped to have the installation of the new foul sewer completed. The next stage of the new foul sewer works will involve transferring existing house connections to the new foul sewer line and decommissioning of the old foul sewer line.

In mid February 2009, the installation of a new 300mm diameter ductile iron watermain began as part of the Ballincollig Green Route and Water Services Contract, Section 1 Works. This new watermain is replacing the existing 150mm diameter uPVC watermain pipe from the Leesdale entrance to the Poulavone Roundabout. The new watermain is now approximately 60% completed. The new watermain began opposite the Leesdale Estate entrance and is currently outside the Rosewood Estate entrance. The watermain is being laid along the westbound carriageway of Main Street Ballincollig. It is planned to continue laying the new watermain eastwards towards the Poulavone Roundabout and by early May 2009 it is hoped to have the installation of the watermain completed. The next stage of the new watermain works will involve transferring existing house connections to the new watermain line and decommissioning of the old watermain line.

Works began at the end of January 2009 at the northern side of the eastbound carriageway near Poulavone. A new 3 metre wide combined footpath and cycle lane is currently being installed at this location and the works are currently just west of the Daffodil Fields entrance. It is planned to continue travelling westbound towards Ballincollig Town Centre along the northern verge of the eastbound carriageway and continue installing ducting, new public lighting and new concrete pedestrian footpath. In late March 2009, it is planned to begin similar works on the southern side of the Main Street Ballincollig westbound carriageway just east of Leo Murphy Road and Main Street Ballincollig Junction. It is planned to travel eastbound towards Poulavone along the southern verge of the westbound carriageway and install ducting, new public lighting and new concrete pedestrian footpath.

The new 450mm to 525mm diameter foul sewer from Main Street Ballincollig into Leesdale was completed in mid January 2009. The road into Leesdale has been surfaced with roadbase and it is planned to add a wearing course on top of the road base before the end of February 2009.

The new 300mm diameter storm drain and associated road gullies from Main Street Ballincollig into Castlepark for approximately 78m was completed in mid January 2009.

Two new temporary speed restriction ramps were installed along Station Road. The first speed restriction ramp is located across the southbound and northbound carriageway of Station Road adjacent to Ballincollig Community Hall. The second speed restriction ramp is located across the southbound and northbound carriageway of Station Road adjacent to Ballincollig's Catholic Church. These temporary speed restriction ramps will remain in place until works along Station Road are completed and at that stage permanent speed ramps will then be installed in accordance with the Traffic Management Guidelines.

Work is continuing at the Kilumney Road and Leo Murphy Road junction with the installation of a traffic light junction. To date, the pedestrian crossings are completed but not operational, the ducts, electrical boxes and traffic lighting columns have been installed and the footpaths have been renewed where necessary. The road surface at the junction around the temporary roundabout at Kilumney road and Leo Murphy junction has deteriorated quite badly. It is planned to resurface the entire junction in mid February 2009. It is hoped to coincide the resurfacing of the junction with the turning on of the traffic lights and resultant removal of the temporary roundabout. The resurfacing of the junction will be carried out at night to minimise disruption to traffic movements at this location.

Work has begun along Main Street Ballincollig from the Leesdale entrance to the Poulavone Roundabout. Works along this section have begun with the installation of a new 450mm diameter to a 300mm diameter foul sewer that will replace the existing foul sewer. These works began on Main Street opposite the entrance to Leesdale and are travelling eastwards along the westbound carriageway towards Poulavone. In mid February 2009 it is planned to begin the installation of a new 300mm diameter ductile iron watermain. This new watermain will replace the existing 150mm diameter uPVC watermain pipe. It is planned to begin on Main Street opposite the entrance to Leesdale and travel eastwards along the westbound carriageway towards Poulavone.

Works began at the end of January 2009 at the northern side of the eastbound carriageway near Poulavone. A new 3 metre wide combined footpath and cycle lane is currently being installed at this location. It is planned to continue travelling westbound towards Ballincollig Town Centre along the northern verge of the eastbound carriageway and install ducting, new public lighting and new pedestrian footpath. Once the foul sewer, watermain and storm sewer has been installed in the westbound carriageway the pedestrian footpath on the southern side of the westbound carriageway will then be renewed and public lighting will also installed on this side. The entire section of road from Leo Murphy Road to Poulavone will not be permanently resurfaced until all works are completed.
